Artist Note
Hello! I’m Rowan, a high school student based in Seattle, Washington, with a deep passion for journalism, arts advocacy, and film. Inspired by themes of social justice, pop culture, and cultural folklore, I’m committed to sharing the stories of BIPOC and LGBTQ individuals while uplifting underrepresented youth through creative storytelling.
My advocacy journey has taken me across various platforms and projects. As vice chair of the Auburn Junior City Council, I focus on LGBTQ+ advocacy and inspiring meaningful change within my community. Through my project “Storytelling for Change,” which I’m developing as a Mike Yarrow Peace Fellow, I aim to empower youth to use art as a vehicle for change, promoting activism and social awareness through creativity.
As a Youth Ambassador for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, I’m dedicated to amplifying youth voices and bridging gaps through advocacy and storytelling. My writing has been featured in The Seattle Times, Real Change, and TeenTix, where I strive to spark dialogue and shed light on issues affecting marginalized communities.
Additionally, I’ve collaborated with Seattle’s LGBTQ+ Center and participated in TeenTix’s Mentorship for Teen Artists of Color, where I work to uplift and support other young artists of color. I’ve also ventured into the world of film and acting, having worked with the CESD Talent Agency and appeared in the canceled DC film Batgirl.
Ultimately, my mission is to harness the power of storytelling to create positive social change, amplify underrepresented voices, and inspire the next generation of youth advocates. Art is a powerful tool, and I believe it has the ability to transform perspectives, challenge norms, and ignite action.

Book Bans: Opinion, and how we can combat
Issue: Books are rapidly being banned and have been purposely excluding various groups and underrepresented communities. Commonly, one parent claims it’s inappropriate, but only towards their specific standards. Wouldn’t you agree that a book deemed inappropriate by one person shouldn’t be banned for all children to read? In pre-school, my favorite book was The Color
